Abstract

Background: Symptom Burden is defined as the subjective prevalence, frequency, and severity of symptoms that place a physiological burden on the patient and cause some negative physical or emotional response to the patient. Symptom burden plays an important role in patients undergoing hemodialysis. This study aimed to determine the relationship between symptom burden and the long-term to undergo hemodialysis among patients with kidney failure at Blambangan Hospital in 2023. Method: This research is cross-sectional, with a purposive sampling technique. The total population in this study was 146 respondents, which fit the inclusion criteria. Data were obtained from the demographic and DSI questionnaires, and then Coding, Scoring, Tabulating, and Chi-Square tests were carried out with SPSS for Windows. Result: This study shows that most of the respondents experienced a high symptom burden (57.7%), and respondents who underwent hemodialysis with a long term <1 year were (42.4%). Further analysis using the Chi-Square test obtained ρ value = 0.01 with an alpha value of 10%, meaning that the ρ value <0.1; thus, there is a significant relationship between symptom burden and the long-term hemodialysis among patients with kidney failure at Blambangan Hospital in 2023. Conclusion: This research is important to measure the symptom burden experienced and to know how strong the effect is from long-term hemodialysis so that it can be useful for hemodialysis patients, families, and clinical practice in handling symptom burden.
